Swaps, swaps, swaps...

Oh how I LOVE swaps!! I just finished my end of the swap on the weekend! This one was an Invite Your Partner swap at Craftster (oh how I love that website! It's chock full of imagination and inspiration!) and a fellow craftster (er?) invited me along with her and she's making me a fairy poppet! Both of us should be receiving our items by the end of the week and I can't WAIT! Swaps are the BEST!!! It's so much fun doing the trades and knowing that the art you lovingly create is going to a good home! And man...is it fun getting that parcel in the mail! Anyhow, I invite you all to join Craftster. It is SO MUCH FUN!!! My handle on that site is FoxyBlue (go figure, huh?) so come and seek me out and let's talk about swapping!

Happy Monday!!

All the best,

Deedra

8 track art!

So...something new! I've started tweeting today!! I wanted to try something new yesterday and figured this was just the perfect thing to do! I think it's going to be fun! So please follow me on my artistic journey! The twitter widget is in my side panel :)

I have this thing. I love buying old things. I love to pick them up and feel the history they possess. I wonder who used to own them and I wonder where they've traveled from. Then, after I've imagined all there is to imagine, I take them and make them into something new and wonderful (at least to me!). This is what I've done with this glorious little 8 track from who knows where and who knows when. I love 8-track art because it stands on its own and is perfect for being a shelf-sitter, and some of them have a little hole on either corner at the back...perfect for hanging. I buy them up by the dozens for normally twenty five cents each. The paper in the background is from a vintage book I found at an Estate Sale in Australia!

This little lovely is called A Message from Flo. Full of mixed media goodness and antiquity!

A Birthday Prezzie for my darling niece....

My sweet niece Echo turned 15 yesterday. Wow, time flies!! We live in different provinces, so I wanted to make her something special, something that can kind of take my place when I'm not around. So I decided to make her a talisman. I wanted to give her love and protection from afar. She's made with lots of awesome, found things. I made a 'love' pendant to hang from her belt. She has tonnes of vintage jewellery that has been passed down. I also added a shell I found in Italy and beautiful vintage buttons. She has sweet grass arms and darling little wrist cuffs made of leather. I LOVED making this little talisman for my gorgeous niece. As it turns out, she loved it, which made me really happy.

Happy Birthday, Echo!!!

Wish

I start work tomorrow...that means less time for art. Much less time. So, I'm trying to squeeze it all in today. Even though I'm in the art department at work, I won't be able to paint what I choose, so I just wanted to do one more little painting before work started :)

This is an 8x8 acrylic and mixed media on board, titled WISH!!!

Delilah the Wood Nymph

I found this little nymph shivering at my back door this morning. When I slid it open, she scurried around the corner and hid. I coaxed her out gently and told her that I meant her no harm. After about an hour of building trust, she slowly made her way toward me. I put my hand out and she climbed on, very cautiously. I brought her in the house and sat her on the biggest greenest leaf my plant had to offer. She smiled, and said thank you. I made her some tea and served it to her in one of my daughter's Barbie tea cups. She sipped slowly, drinking in the warmth, and soon fell asleep. I placed a tiny blanket on her and let her dream in peace.

When I came back an hour later, I found my plant bursting with flowers in all the colours of the rainbow. The little fairy looked up, reached out her hand and said, 'Pleased to meet you. I'm Delilah'.

'Choices'

Photobucket

As I come to the end of 2010, I'm faced with a decision. It needed an answer...and quick! So I turned to my therapist, Mr. Canvas, and his partner Mrs. Paint. They helped me make a choice. As I painted this, it started out rather dark, and as I came closer to reaching a decision, it started to turn happier. This made me realize that the choice I made was a good one.

Thanks for visiting
and
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!

Hospital gown for my niece in ICU

My niece got in a tragic car accident last week. We were inches away from losing her. She'll be in the hospital for months for rehabilitation and what not. I made her this hospital gown because she would hate to be seen in those hospital-issued ones. I couldn't find any patterns online that I liked, so I reconstructed this from a man's dress shirt. I cut the sleeves to a desired length, cut off the button hole and button band, and used the back for the front by cutting a V for the v neck. I made some bias tape and concealed the sleeve and collar edges. I lengthened it by cutting straight across the bottom and adding panels of cool fabric, and made some lamé bias tape for the bottom. I widened it by adding panels to the back and adding ribbon for tying, and also, between the two panels are 6 velcro tabs to keep her little behind well-hidden.

Please pray for the speedy recovery of my niece. She's a beautiful soul with such a promising future, and the road ahead of her will be full of obstacles.

** If anyone would like to use my pattern for a gift or charity, please feel free. I only ask that this pattern not be used for profit**

Oh my goodness...

It has been soooooooooooooooooooooooooo long since I've poked my head in here. And it's not for lack of being creative and having things to show off. Man...have I been BUSY! I've been creating up a storm. I'll show you some of the things I've been up to. Mostly sewing, I guess, with a little bit of painting here and there. I'll see what I can find in my arsenal of photos...

For one, here's a poppet that I just finished for a swap on craftster.org. I LOVE how she turned out. She really makes me smile and I hope my partner loves her as much as I do! lol

Secondly, a little monkey (free pattern can be found here )for my friend's daughter's third birthday.

Thirdly a bag for my youngest son's teacher for her end of year gift. It's fully lined and hand-embroidered...hope she liked it!

A car trash bag! Complete with fitted plastic insert for wet trash! I included my own tutorial here. I really like how these turned out. I made around three of these.

Anyhow, there are so many more things I've made, and I will post more about them later! Hope you enjoyed these ones!!

A Father's Day commission...

My friend Aaron commissioned me on this piece a few weeks ago. It's a 20x24" mixed media and acrylic on canvas. She loved the other father and daughter painting of mine so much, and it reminded her of a picture she took of her husband and daughter at the lake two years ago, so she asked me to do a painting of it!

I hope this painting gives them years and years of memories and happiness...

A memory quilt...

I am so nostalgic that even the thought of parting with Sisi's baby clothes brings me to tears, but I couldn't just hold onto these items in a plastic bin forever, so my mom and I got to work. We cut out 60 squares from her clothing. Was it ever painful to cut through those pieces. I knew that this project wasn't one that could just sit, unfinished. If I was going to cut those up, they had better be made into something really special. All of the squares are made of memories, and it makes me smile.

The little pink and blue embroidered flowers come from a little lime green dress that I adored. It was so sweet and girlie, it had to be a part of this quilt. This piece will always make me smile.

I wanted to keep pockets and ruffles and gathering from dresses to be reminded that they are, indeed, from her amazing little pieces of clothing. Pieces that once fit a tiny little body...

I traced her hand and appliqued it to the quilt with some hand-embroidered lettering saying her age, because I'm giving this to her for her third birthday.

I think this speaks for itself...

Just to remind her that she's loved...

To my Little Red, with love.

XOXO

I know it's been a while...

...but I'm back. Stella got her groove back, so to speak.

For my 'Let Your Art Guide You' submission for this week, I'm presenting two items! I got two things done, so I might as well post them!

First is my 'Gypsy Woman'. Mixed media and acrylic on rescued wood.

And then there's 'Dream' - Mixed media on rescued wood.

I sure did enjoy making these. You all know how much I love texture!
I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed making them!

XO

With Arms Wide Open

For my 'Let Your Art Guide You' this week, I'm delighted to present 'With Arms Wide Open'. This was a commission painting that a father had me paint for his young daughter on her 5th birthday. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he is unable to see his daughter as much as he would wish. He wants her to know how much he loves her, even though he's not around, so he had me paint this as a token of his love to her. I am honoured that he would have me paint something so dear to his heart. Such a lovely man.

I was filled with emotion while painting this. I wanted it to be perfect. I made his hands slightly bigger than I normally would because I wanted her to know that her dad's love is strong and will always take care of her. I made the sky brighter around her head, and it has a pearlized sheen to symbolize that she is the light in his life, his angel. The accessory in her hair is symbolic of a halo.

I hope you all enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed painting it!

Let your art guide you - week 10!

Another week, another submission to 'Let Your Art Guide You'. As you're all probably aware, I've started an art journal. I figured today's entry was a perfect submission for the LYAGY deal! This is, indeed, letting my art guide me! She's all about sparkling!

Also, a couple new and exciting things! I got a poppet in the mail as part of a swap with a lovely lady named Edel. She came all the way from Ireland! Sapphire opened her up and decided that she should be named Chaina. She's wonderful and whimsical. I'm very happy to have done this swap with Edel! She also included some Irish drinking socks, (lol) a clover phone charm and some chocolate! Yay!

And last but not least, I wanted to let it be known that some of my work was featured on craftster! Woo hoo! I made these costumes without a pattern a couple years ago for my boys. I'm pretty proud of them and think they turned out really well!

So much to do...

My mom is coming to stay for a while, and I have a load of things on my plate to get done before she gets here. First off, is the bedroom. I have to clean out one of the boys' rooms and make it into her room. And then I have to go out and buy a bunk bed so that the boys can comfortably share a room.

This art journal entry is about me, trying to figure out how to get everything done. No easy task for someone who isn't good at organizing!

You get out what you put in...

I've been feeling somewhat accomplished lately. I've been writing lists and checking off each task as it gets finished. I'm feeling really good about it all. I'm very much a scatterbrain, so to some this may seem like no big deal, but to me it's HUGE!

So I wanted to reflect this in my art journal. The art on the right is mine. She's made with pencil crayons, glitter, candy wrapper, pen, ink, and paint. The art on the left is just something I printed off etsy because she inspired me. I like to keep things that inspire me close by. You never know when you'll need inspiration!

The Queen of My World

I've been wanting to art journal for a looooooooooooooong time, but every time I tried, I failed. The blank page, well actually, the massive amounts of blank pages totally freaked. me. out. But as I was waiting for my husband to finish reffing at my kids' jiu jitsu tournament, I pulled out a pen and a little journal and started sketching. The lady on the left is some kind of wood nymph or something. Her hair is a seed pod and her dress is teeming with life. When I got home, I pulled out some art supplies and just had fun with it. I hope you all like it. I sure had fun creating it, and I do intend to keep up with this art journaling, because I found it to be fulfilling and very therapeutic...

Left-Over Easter Chocolate anyone?

Ok, so what do you do when you have too much of this...

...and this lying around?

Why...you make THIS of course! At least that's what I did today! I just coarsely chopped a whole mound of white and milk chocolate and put it in my favourite cookie recipe...and I'm pretty sure they're decadent-tasting (although I don't know first-hand because I don't dare touch them!)!

But anyhow, I think I'll probably just bake up lots of batches of muffins and cookies and chocolate chip zucchini bread and freeze some for later!

An amazing swap!!

I am so thrilled and in love with this doll, that I can scarcely express myself. I did another swap recently with a lovely lady in Washington named Meredith. She doesn't have an etsy store or any website to showcase her beautiful work, but here's a link to where she posted my beautiful doll. Please visit and leave her the wonderful comments she so richly deserves! This doll is named Breeze. She was made as an heirloom gift for my little Sapphire. Isn't she WONDERFUL??????

I've been slacking again...

Inspirational moments seem to be few and far between when it comes to painting these days...and it's a real pain in the you-know-what, because I have a few commissions that I need to start (and finish) and an equal amount of swaps that need to get done! Ack! Deedra...get your butt in gear!

Anyhow, for my submission for Let You Art Guide you, Week 8, I present to you...

Face in Brambles

It's an 8x10 mixed media and acrylic piece on stretched canvas. Hope you like it!
