A memory quilt...

I am so nostalgic that even the thought of parting with Sisi's baby clothes brings me to tears, but I couldn't just hold onto these items in a plastic bin forever, so my mom and I got to work. We cut out 60 squares from her clothing. Was it ever painful to cut through those pieces. I knew that this project wasn't one that could just sit, unfinished. If I was going to cut those up, they had better be made into something really special. All of the squares are made of memories, and it makes me smile.

The little pink and blue embroidered flowers come from a little lime green dress that I adored. It was so sweet and girlie, it had to be a part of this quilt. This piece will always make me smile.

I wanted to keep pockets and ruffles and gathering from dresses to be reminded that they are, indeed, from her amazing little pieces of clothing. Pieces that once fit a tiny little body...

I traced her hand and appliqued it to the quilt with some hand-embroidered lettering saying her age, because I'm giving this to her for her third birthday.

I think this speaks for itself...

Just to remind her that she's loved...

To my Little Red, with love.
XOXO

Oh my!!! How precious is that!? I don't know if I'd be able to cut the clothes! What a sweet gift, one she really appreciate as she gets older!
Precious! I love this idea. And the quilt will be with her forever.
Wow Deedra this is such a beautiful quilt. What a lovely idea. I have that same problem with my boys clothes so doing something like this really appeals to me, so gorgeous!!!
o my goodness, that is so precious!
I saw this on Craftster and my heart jumped! I have been wanting to do something like this with my two girls' baby clothes for a long time, but I don't even know where to start. Is there anything you could share?
So I saw you on "love maegan's" Blog. I wanted to invite you to follow my blog. I developed the idea for "Featured Followers by Elle © " where I promote my followers. Check out my blog @ www.edkdolce.blogspot.com

Thank you, everyone!!
Mama B - Here's sort of a rough idea on how I made it. It wasn't hard to do, just super time-consuming (but worth every second!)
It was a 6x6" square. I just cut out a piece of 6x6" cardboard and traced 60 squares out of articles of baby clothing, keeping in ruffles and pockets and any reminders of her childhood :). I used fusible webbing for the iron-on appliques and hand-embroidered them. I really just 'winged' it with the pattern. And kept on adding panels ... adding more on the sides until it became the size of a twin bed. Be sure to iron each seam open. Once all the pieces were together, and the back and front of the quilt sewn together, with right sides facing, I stitched the batting with little tucks to the piece (still inside out, right sides facing) so that it didn't move when I turned it right side out. Once it was right-side-out, I used many many safety pins to keep everything from shifting while sewing (this step is very important). I pinned inside every square and sporadically throughout the panels. Then I sewed up the bottom seam, and proceeded to quilt over every seam. I used my machine for this. Et voila!!
I hope that helps a little!
Oh my that is just so very sweet and darling!
Wow! That is so amazing! I love how you left in the ruffles and the details. I love the you are my sunshine! What a treasure to wrap your little love-bug in.
It's the best Deedra, totally the best! The start of beautiful dreams!

Caelum.
